According to surveys, most CIOs feel that digital transformation is not an easy journey. Three main obstacles that they often quote are:
- Transforming monolithic apps to cloud-native is complex,
- The latency between the different application components is a major concern, and
- There is a lack of developer skills and resources in the industry in general.
All these challenges make the transformation to a cloud-native environment a difficult goal that takes a long time to achieve. This is significant for most organisations as a substantial proportion of enterprise environments are looking to deploying their applications across distributed environments. Often, that means deploying applications on a combination of on-premises, cloud and edge environments.
That’s the challenge that VMware has been working towards for the last few years, working with all cloud platform providers, to ensure that the same VMware Cloud Foundations (VCF) based platform, along with Tanzu, is available for customers to consume so that there are no new skills to learn as a prerequisite for migration, thereby providing a fast start to transformation.
VMware Cloud, being available now on all major cloud platforms means that customers can rest assured that whichever platform they pick as the cloud aligned to their strategy, the same familiar VMware platform is available to them, allowing them to accelerate their cloud journey with confidence.
To help customers move to the cloud faster, VMware is making 3 key accelerators today:
- VMware Cloud Universal
- VMware Cloud Console
- VMware App Navigator
VMware Cloud Universal
It’s a subscription model where customers can buy credits and can consume as much or as little of VMware Cloud on whichever platform they want within a specified period.
Customers also get the choice to bring their pre-existing perpetual licenses to this model and there are cloud acceleration benefits as well. Quite what they are is unclear currently, but I am sure we’ll find out soon and hopefully, the result will be good for the customers that have already made large investments into VMware licensing over the years.
VMware Cloud Console
When working with a subscription model, it is important for customers to know the exact spend on all their cloud platforms and their consumed or remaining capacity.
VMware Cloud Console gives you an integrated and consistent experience so that you can easily track all the metrics and gives you end-to-end visibility of consumption and spend. In addition, you can manage all your subscriptions from this console.
VMware App Navigator
This is not a product but a very targeted 4-week professional services offering that allows you to benefit from the vast experience that VMware has gained while working with thousands of customers to help accelerate their cloud journey.
When subscribed to, VMware experts will come and work with you to assess your application portfolio, prioritise the application transformation candidates based on business value and help drive your transformation in the most optimal fashion.
Final Thoughts
VMware is making fantastic progress in providing choice to its customers, whereby they can make the decision on the cloud of choice that aligns best with their strategic goals with confidence and offer them the same experience regardless.
Getting past that choice and migrating to that platform of choice, allows the customer to focus on what matters most to them, which is to transform their applications with minimal risk to the business. Now they can do so in the most agile fashion and with minimal risk to operations. Surely that can only be good news!
